An end to cancer. It may sound like a dream that won’t ever come true, but the doctors at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center are working on it. In fact, according to the Olympia Hutch Guild: “Dr. Gary Gilliland, president and director emeritus of Fred Hutch, believes Hutch scientists can find curative therapies for many, if not all, cancers by the year 2025. They just need the funding to do it.” Imagine a world without cancer. You can help make that a realty by playing golf! Just head to the Drive Out Cancer Golf Classic at the Olympia Country & Golf Club on September 10.

Olympia Fundraiser to End Cancer

Come out for a fun round of golf! This classic will include 18 holes of golf in a four-person, shotgun format. There will be prizes for closest to the pin, longest drive and most accurate drive. I-5 Cars is sponsoring a hole-in-one car giveaway! Following the fun on the course, there will be an award dinner with a raise the paddle for the Olympia Hutch Guild.

But the fun doesn’t stop there! They will also have basket raffles and a cocktail reception. Not a golfer? There are a limited number of dinner-only tickets available. And if you need teammates, they can help with that.

“All proceeds are supporting the Oly Hutch Guild, which is a group of dedicated people who are helping to win the war on Cancer,” explains Julie Goldsmith, one of the Drive Out Cancer organizers. “They approach this with vigor by sponsoring events to raise money for the Fred Hutch Cancer Research Center. A portion of the registration will go directly to the guild and will be eligible for a 501(c)3 tax deduction. The exact amount will be communicated to all registered players at the conclusion of the event.”

Registration is open now and is just $250 for a full day of fun and good food – if you have never eaten at the Olympia Country & Golf Club, you are missing out! Your registration will include all the above, plus an engraved wooden bag tag, a swag bag, two drink tickets, pinwheel to recognize loved ones who have survived cancer, are fighting the fight or have been taken by cancer, and a buffet-style lunch you can have on the terrace or take on the course.

“Cancer affects everyone,” shares Jules. “Cancer research transforms and saves lives. The purpose of studying cancer is to develop safe and effective methods to prevent, detect, diagnose, treat, and, ultimately, cure the collections of diseases we call cancer.  The mission of the Fred Hutch is to, ‘Save lives and wipe out cancer and related diseases worldwide.’”

The Olympia Hutch Guild is a nonprofit comprised of a group of Curestarters, as they are called, who organizes fundraisers to benefit the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. The Research Center has been responsible for some of the most amazing breakthroughs in cancer treatment, including bone marrow transplants, the HPV vaccine, tumor paint – which allows doctors to see cancerous cells during operations to make sure they eliminate it all without removing healthy tissue – and more.
