Downtown Olympia has no shortage of options when it comes to pubs. In theory, they all offer the same things: drinks, a booth and a bartender to serve you. In reality, however, these bars are unique and quirky in their own special way, just like the Olympians who frequent them.
We all have a favorite pub. We might choose our preferred dive based on the beer selection, the food they serve or the type of music they play. Is your favorite on our list?
King Solomon’s Reef

The Reef is an Olympia staple when it comes to diner food. Their website boasts that they are, “The Best Diner in the Galaxy,” and they just might be right. But behind that diner, through an alleyway entry, you can find a small lounge. The back bar at The Reef is fitted with a rounded bar counter and large black booths. There are tables made from repurposed arcade games and a juke box filled with all your favorite songs. They serve both beer and spirits. The Reef’s diner menu is available in the back bar and it is one of the best places to get food late at night. My go-to is a grilled cheese with mashed potatoes. Trust me on this one – you will not regret it.
Oly Taproom

The Oly Taproom is not a traditional pub per se, but for any beer enthusiast this is the place to be. The Taproom offers rotating taps of draft beer as well as bottles and cans that can be purchased to take home or enjoyed on site. With over 600 bottles in stock, you will be sure to find something you love. The Taproom is always hosting fun events like Trivia and Brewery Nights. Their Facebook page is a great way to stay informed about all upcoming events. The Oly Taproom just celebrated its second anniversary in March.
Cryptotropa

Cryptotropa, aka The Crypt, is a bar with a great deal of character to say the least. The large windows near the entrance provide enough light to showcase the old wooden bar, the one from behind which you will be mixed a hand-crafted cocktail or poured a craft beer. Beyond the bar, lighting is minimal aside from a few red lightbulbs. The eerie red light casts shadows in the cubby-like booths, enhancing the gothic nature of the joint. Fully-equipped with gargoyle statues, the Crypt is just spooky enough to keep you on your toes but dark and cozy enough for you to lose track of time and spend your entire evening there.
The Brotherhood Lounge

The Brotherhood Lounge, or the “Broho” as many call it, is a true gem. There is a long bar lining one side of the pub, a row of shiny red booths along the other and a neon sign that reads “Prescriptions” above the spirits. There are pool tables for the sporting types, weekly movie nights and a daily happy hour. The Brotherhood truly has something for everyone. The Broho also hosts entertainment by the Airbound Underground, Olympia’s aerial performance troupe. Keep an eye on The Brotherhood’s events page to mark your calendar for the next show.
The Eastside Club Tavern

Finally, my true favorite, The Eastside Club Tavern. The Eastside is a no-nonsense, cash-only, beer-only establishment. With rotating taps of only the best beers available, this pub will allow you to enjoy a new and exciting pint with every visit. They serve a wide selection of IPAs, Pilsners, stouts, ciders and more. The atmosphere is fun and casual. There are plenty of barstools, booths and pool tables to enjoy while sipping a cold one. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and always happy to assist you in selecting the right brew. As an added bonus, food from neighboring restaurant, Our Table, is available by way of a pass-through window in the back of the bar.
As a girl who has watched one too many episodes of Cheers, I can testify that the allure of the neighborhood bar pulls me in like a moth to the flame. And while I cannot claim total expertise in the field, I can certainly say I have done my fair share of research. But, you do not have to take my word for it. Somewhere in Olympia, someone is waiting to pour you a drink, so go check it out for yourself.
Chances are, I will see you there. Cheers!
