Athletes at The Evergreen State College Place in Track and Women’s Wrestling Championships

Izabelle Trefts (Jr.) provided The Evergreen State College with a first place finish in the women’s 1,500-meter run at the PLU Invite, hosted by Pacific Lutheran University on Friday, March 14 and Saturday, March 15.

Trefts won the 1,500 with a time of 5:14.19. She earned a margin of victory of 3.50 seconds. Jessalyn Roble of PLU was second in 5:17.69. Alana Lim from University of Puget Sound placed third at 5:18.19.

Three Geoducks placed in the top nine in the women’s 5,000-meter run. Sherlyn Perales (Fr.) was second in 18:50.72 and Trefts was third in 18:52.59. Madison Palek (So.) placed ninth with a time of 19:27.57. Erin Schmidlin from Puget Sound won the 5,000 at 18:28.65.

The times for Perales, Trefts, and Palek in the 5,000 placed all three competitors in the top 10 all-time at Evergreen. Perales is third on the all-time list, while Trefts is fifth and Palek is eighth

Rowan Hicks (So.) of Evergreen earned seventh place out of 31 athletes in the men’s 1,500-meter run by finishing the race in 4:10.93. He was just 0.09 out of sixth place and 0.91 out of fifth. Hicks registered a time of 2:03.82 while competing in the 800-meter run. On the Geoducks’ all-time list, Hicks moved into fifth in the 1,500 and into 10th in the 800.

In the women’s discus throw, Jalyn Sackrider (Sr.) qualified for the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships with a toss of over 35 meters. Exact marks were not immediately available.

“I am really proud of the way we competed this weekend. We had a lot of personal bests, a conference qualifying mark, and a victory in the women’s 1,500!” Evergreen Head Cross Country and Track and Field Coach Joel Pearson said. “I’m excited about Jalyn qualifying for conference in her first meet back after a great basketball season. All around, a really good meet for Evergreen!”

The Evergreen track and field teams are scheduled to compete at the Oregon Preview on Friday, March 21 and Saturday, March 22. The meet will be held at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus in Eugene.

Parker Borrero Takes 3rd, Tallman 8th, at NAIA Championships

Flor Parker Borrero (Jr.) from The Evergreen State College earned third place in the 160-pound weight class and teammate Nizhoni Tallman (Sr.) took eighth place in the 110-pound weight class, as the 2025 NAIA Women’s Wrestling Championships concluded on Saturday, March 15 at the Park City Arena. Parker Borrero and Tallman each received NAIA All-America honors. Ellabelle Taylor (So.) of Evergreen lost in the fourth round of consolation play in the 124-pound weight class on Friday.

Parker Borrero claimed All-America status for the second year in a row. She placed sixth in the 155-pound weight class at the 2024 NAIA Championships last season.

On Saturday, Parker Borrero, seeded #2, closed out a very strong season as she won all three matches with pins. Each of the wins occurred about halfway through the first period. She defeated Abigal Sebesta of Ottawa University (Kan.) with a fall at 1:31 in the consolation quarterfinals. She downed Josette Partney of Missouri Baptist University, seeded #5, with a pin at 1:36. In the third place match, Parker Borrero defeated #4-seeded Micah Fisher from University of the Cumberlands with a fall at 1:28.

Parker Borrero finished the season with a 23-1 overall record. She achieved 22 pins and won one match with a technical fall.

​Tallman registered NAIA All-America recognition for the first time. In the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday, she lost to #8-seeded Alexsys Jacquez from University of St. Mary (Kan.) 11-0 on a technical fall. Tallman was defeated in the seventh place match against #7-seeded Tristan Nitta of Grand View University (Iowa) due to an injury in the closing seconds of the second period. Nitta held a 4-0 lead at the time of the injury.

As the tournament headed into the championship matches later on Saturday, Evergreen was 15th in the team standings with 32.0 points. Evergreen’s team finish may change due to results on Saturday night.

Life University (Ga.) sat atop the team standings with 177.0 points. Grand View was second with 120.5 points, and Cumberlands was third at 116.5 points.

Parker Borrero, Tallman, and Taylor each were competing at the NAIA Championships for the second consecutive year.
