Rubel’s dedication to caregiving has been a lifelong commitment, with a particular passion for supporting individuals with dementia. She holds a dual bachelor’s degree in economics and accounting, as well as postgraduate education from the University of Washington, and is a certified community educator with the Alzheimer’s Association. Six years ago, this deep interest in supporting the area’s aging population prompted her to open ABOVE Home Health in Olympia, which now provides home care and home health services throughout South Puget Sound. Today, the agency’s 40 staff, which includes registered nurses and certified nursing assistants, are making a difference in clients’ lives in Olympia, Lacey, Tumwater, Shelton, Centralia, Lakewood, Yelm, Tacoma, Seattle and nearby areas.
“The ability to make a meaningful impact on the lives of those affected by dementia and enhance their quality of life is incredibly rewarding,” Rubel says. “The combination of my business background and my deep commitment to caregiving has made supporting individuals who depend on home care a natural and fulfilling career path. ABOVE Home Health’s Caregiver On The Go Provides Unparalleled Flexibility in a Client-Centered Approach
Rubel says their innovative Caregiver On The Go service came from what she identified as a need for a client-centered approach offering flexible, tailored, shorter and less-costly in-home visits. No minimum hours or visits are required. With Caregiver On The Go, many seniors now receive care and support they might not have otherwise been able to afford. For example, ABOVE Home Health clients can have an on-demand visit once a month or a set of scheduled visits, making it easier for seniors to maintain their independence. Visits can be as short as five minutes. “While traditional long visits are administratively simpler, we recognized that many families simply couldn’t afford them,” she explains. “Our Caregiver On The Go service was born out of the need to provide affordable, on-demand care without long-term commitments.”
Services include picking up supplies, medications and groceries; light housekeeping; assistance with showers, toileting, continence, transfers and mobility; visits to specialists; assisting during recovery at home after a medical procedure, and many more. And ABOVE Home Health’s registered nurses can delegate specific tasks to trained nursing assistants to help diabetic clients; administer prescription eye drops, cremes; change bandages; assist with pain management, and provide other support.
Rubel says they can sit down with a client and their family to assess and develop a plan that best fits the client’s health journey. And when a client’s needs change, ABOVE Home Health staff can adjust their service level accordingly. “We build a relationship,” says Rubel.
Long-time client Jean Showalter in Shelton is just one of many successful examples. He says ABOVE Home Health has been a good fit for his caregiving needs, and he is happy with their services. He says he determined he required more help at home after his wife died. “At the time, I was looking for a caregiver, and someone gave me their number and they came right out and got me services,” he says. “I get help with housework, and meals and stuff like that.” He initially received assistance three days a week and now requires services only twice weekly.
