Five student-athletes at The Evergreen State College have been named 2025 Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athletes for spring sports. The Geoducks receiving Scholar-Athlete recognition are River Scheuerell (So., Sr. academically) from men’s track and field, and Iris Campesino (Sr.), Alauna Carstens (Jr.), Claire Ryan (So.), and Jalyn Sackrider (Sr.) from the women’s track and field team.
Daktronics NAIA Scholar-Athlete honorees needed a 3.5 cumulative grade point average or higher (on a 4.0 scale), appear on the eligibility certificate for their sport, and have attended their academic institution for at least one academic year. Evergreen does not give letter grades, but the academic accomplishments of the nominated student-athletes were converted to a 4.0 GPA scale.

Scheuerell attended Olympia Regional Learning Academy in Olympia, Washington. Last year, he qualified for the 2024 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the 5,000-meter race walk. He will be competing in the race walk at the Nancy and Norm Berney Classic in Salem, Oregon, on April 26 and at the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships on May 9-10 with hopes of qualifying for the NAIA Championships for a second time.
He holds the Evergreen men’s 5,000-meter race walk record of 24:31.93. Sheuerell’s areas of academic focus at Evergreen as a post-baccalaureate student are music and audio productions. In 2024, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Evergreen in organization leadership and audio engineering and a Bachelor of Science degree in environmental sciences and applied mathematics.

Campesino is a sprinter for the Geoducks. She holds personal record times of 13.98 seconds in the 100-meter dash and 29.02 seconds in the 200-meter dash. She is from Rainier, Washington, and graduated from Tenino High School. Her academic area is interest is environmental studies.
In addition to competing in track and field, Campesino is a member of the Evergreen women’s soccer team. In four seasons as a midfielder with the Geoducks, she played in 50 games, made 33 starts, and was a leader on the field. She played in a career-high 14 games in the fall of 2024.

Carstens is from Shelton, Washington, and attended Shelton High School. She transferred to Evergreen from Saint Martin’s University. At Evergreen in 2023-24, she was named All-American in cross country and outdoor track and field (5,000 meters). This year, she has earned All-American in the marathon and indoor track and field (3,000 meters). She was the NAIA Marathon Champion.
She has qualified for the 2025 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in two events. In the 5,000-meter run, she qualified with a school record time of 16:55.87. She qualified in the 10,000-meter run in 35:33.04 while setting another school record. She has qualified for the CCC Championships in the 5,000-meter run, 10,000-meter run, and the 1,500-meter run. Carstens is focusing on health education at Evergreen.

Ryan is a thrower for Evergreen. She has qualified for this year’s CCC Championships in the hammer throw with a personal record mark of 39.39 meters (129′ 3″). She recorded the mark at the PLU Open on March 7. Her career-best weight throw in indoor track and field went 11.64 meters (38′ 2.25″), as she set the Geoducks’ school record.
At Evergreen, Ryan is focused on political science in the classroom. She is from Kent, Washington, and graduated from Kentlake High School. At Kentlake, she was the Valedictorian of her senior class.

Sackrider is from Elma, Washington, and Elma High School. Her academic emphasis is education. Sackrider is a thrower for the Geoducks and has qualified for the CCC Championships in the discus throw with a top distance of 37.36 meters (122′ 7″) this season. Her personal record in the discus is 39.09 meters (128′ 3″).
During her career at Evergreen, Sackrider has been a two-sport athlete who also competed in women’s basketball. In 2024-25, she was named First Team All-CCC and was chosen CCC Co-Defensive Player of the Year after averaging 12.8 points, 8.9 rebounds, and 2.8 blocked shots per game. She set school records with 71 blocks this season and 190 blocks in her career. Sackrider finished fourth all-time at Evergreen with 966 career points and was second all-time with 736 career rebounds.
